Joel, again, thank you for giving me lots more to think about… This is just the beginning of a thought, triggered by your comments here, but in I Corinthians 8:9, we have, “Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.” Something I just noticed is that Paul isn’t talking about “modesty” here. He’s talking about PRIDE. Certain people were taking pride in the fact that they felt no allegiance to idols, and had no superstitious fear of eating food which had been offered to them… and then flaunting that right in the face of “weaker” brothers. As you say, there is a certain amount of intentionality here, of puffing ourselves up because we are “wiser” than those poor slobs who are still afraid of idols. As soon as we start applying this principle of pride to blaming “immodest” women for “leading men astray”, I think we start skating on thin ice…
