Sitting, the new smoking.

Prolonged uninterrupted sitting literally kills

There are plenty of studies showing the destructive power of sitting at your computer for hours on end. Glucose metabolism crashes and your cardiovascular system breaks down. Google “is sitting lethal” and you’ll have your proof. The first line of defense is your back. I have been practicing Chiropractic for 30 years and my practice looks nothing like it did the first 15. I primarily treated sports injuries, the elderly and trauma. Now my typical patient is mid-30's to 40's, sits all day at a computer and develops back pain insidiously. Often times they present with neurological damage from a herniated disc. Fixing these problems is easy, maintaining them much tougher. Patient compliance is just about nil. I advise patients they must get up every 30 minutes and walk for 1 or 2 minutes. Go out for lunch and take 2 other 15-20 minute walks as well. They are incredulous at these suggestions and I know nearly all will not follow through. They think they don’t have the time. In reality these breaks will not only refresh their spine, but their eyes, and brain as well leading to more productivity. Typicall my patients return to my office in 2 to 3 months with the same condition, but in worse shape than the last episode. Perversely I don’t think I have one smoker as a patient. Why? They’re up every 30 minutes to go out and smoke!
