Be truthful — A client had a contract that was very much in their favor. When it was time to renew the contract, it was discovered a member of the C-Team had secretly altered some pricing in our favor. By being upfront about it and owning the activity, the customer openly renewed their contract, with caution of course. They might have never found the alteration but I wasn’t willing to gain a reputation of being a liar or a cheat.

Be kind: it’s a simple one. No one wants to work for people they don’t like and don’t want to be around. In high pressure startup world it can be stressful, never let your stress compromise your ability to show kindness to your team, your customers, and your partners.

…We also launched a new website and have an app on the way in the coming weeks. Quickly prototyping and continuing to develop innovative products, events and first and foremost a platform that our community really loves is how we are going to get through this next uncertain time.

Creating an environment of trust, integrity, and honesty: The only way to create trust is to give it willingly and expect it in return. When employees trust each other, there is no situation too great that cannot be navigated. This starts and ends with having a solid moral compass routed in integrity and honesty.

Learn the power of leveraging your strengths- You benefit nothing from the strengths you identify but do not apply but identifying them doesn’t always mean you are the one to apply them. Sometimes as a leader, you are meant to teach your strengths to show others how to leverage them. Remember leadership isn’t about you, it about putting the needs of others first and bringing out the best in them so when you have someone on your team that has an area of opportunity and can benefit from learning your strength, teach them and allow them to sore.

Trust and delegation empower people; the Covid pandemic has helped some leaders who didn’t trust their people to trust them to be productive whilst working at home. There was a nervousness even amongst some people I know back in March 2020, but the reality is that most people are good people and want to do a good job, so left to their own devices in lockdown, they did! We will have better companies post-Covid than before where leaders have embraced this reality.

To all leaders out there: your team is the center of everything. Always be the one that motivates them, that establishes clear guidelines for their team to follow, and always be open to listen to them. Active listening will help to avoid many problems in the future. Additionally, surround yourself with all the members of your team: from the individual contributors to the management team. Specifically for women leaders, know that you can do it, always. Very often we (women) tend to limit ourselves, fall into the impostor syndrome, and attribute our success to luck. …

Be self-aware and recognize that your actions impact others.

In the military, your actions impact life and liberty. If I failed to do something in the military, my team was punished along with me, which created self-discipline and an accountability to others.

…Having a good boss and the right team, with the right chemistry, can make your work life ten times better and more successful. Take the time to hire (and be hired) well.

Be a visible role model. Employees tend to get their visual clues for how to behave from two key people, their immediate boss, and the CEO. All leaders, but especially those two, must make their presence visible on a constant basis.

During these times, this contact is even more difficult since their presence is mainly virtual. Using every communication channel available, leaders must demonstrate the attitudes and behaviors they wish and expect others to follow in line with the company’s purpose, values, and beliefs.
