It’s all about disruption

Always Plan with the goal in mind

It’s not only about making it differently, it’s mainly about purpose.I want to give you two examples of disruption in the music industry, one of which I helped build in some extent.

The Buraka Som Sistema EPK (Electronic Press Kit) was produced and directed by me and André Braz, and broadcasted on Channel 4 England.

From Portugal to the World Buraka Som Sistema are today one of the most influential bands of the world. Their disruption in the music industry came with their purpose in mind. Connect the Luanda-Lisbon-Rio de janeiro music axis. To do so they used a different approach and behaviour in terms of business model. They started their own label, and for the release of their first album they licensed it to proeminent london club. Which meant getting investment in advance and allowing them to grow the revenues, promotion and marketing of their brand (Band and label), products (records, merchandise and label rooster).

The other example of disruption on the music industry are Odd Future. The band/hub of music genres came to my attention on 2010. Their disruption started on the distribution end. Their first work was delivered for free on Tumblr, and even more disruptive, was the way they engaged with fans. Through pop up stores where they sold their merchandise mostly created and made by themselves, including their video footage and music videos, (content) and made “Happennings”.

Both examples gives you the idea of disruption. As the industry evolved from the major labels/ major contracts and marketing machines behind them, to an almost DIY iteration approach. I leave you my favourite videos of Buraka and Odd Future.
