The Medium is the message
Let’s hope this doesn’t turn out to be another Posterous
When I first discovered Medium, I thought, “this is just another one of those minimalist self-publishing platforms, like Posterous, that will probably be dead in a couple years.”
…and that may still be true. But, just look how pretty it is! I had to give it a try.
The only problem here is that the new redesign of my website & blog, Bleachwave, is going to be launching in less than a month. So part of me couldn’t figure out exactly what to DO with this little guy. I certainly don’t want people to think I have 2 blogs.
Here’s how I plan to keep my Medium site different from my Bleachwave blog:
- Medium has a much better system than WordPress for allowing readers to add comments and feedback. Due to the amount of spam I used to receive, my new Bleachwave blog will not allow any comments or discussion on posts. With Medium’s unique approach to paragraph-level, in-context comments, or “notes,” I can actually have (*gasp*) mature, intellectual conversations with my readers.
- Medium is for rough, quick, un-edited thoughts & ponderings, whereas Bleachwave will be a portfolio of my best writing, complete with photos and multimedia. I don’t want to try to write big, professional, extended essays on Medium; I want to use it like Twitter but without the 140 character limit.
- If Bleachwave is my tuxedo, then Medium is my blue jeans with torn holes in the knees. On Medium, I’m more likely to discuss personal opinions and potentially controversial subjects. I probably won’t get into religious or in-depth political views, but I will definitely be a lot more open and candid.
That’s pretty much it. I hope you enjoy what I have to say here. I’ll try to keep most of my posts fairly short. And if this thing gets bought and shut down by Yahoo or Google in a few years, then I oh well…
