The Super Natural Café give us a history lesson on veggie food in the toon

Today on #MeatFreeMondaysInTheToon we spoke to the amazing Super Natural Café about being the first kids on the block and how things have changed in the ever growing vegan market.

Launching in 1978, Super Natural is a café bar dedicated to serving up the best vegan food and drink.

Located on Grainger Street, this central spot is a hit among local vegans.

Why did you open Super Natural Café?

Andrew at Super Natural Café said: “We started the business because of a passion for animal welfare and to try and demonstrate quality plant based alternative foods.”

What’s the Story behind Super Natural Café?

Andrew said: “Super Natural was Newcastle’s first vegetarian restaurant and dates back to 1978.”

Andrew added: “Originally located behind the city library, we moved to our new location on Grainger Street around six and a half years ago.”

After being in the business for so long, Super Natural Café have seen the vegan food market change over the years.

Andrew said: ” The vegan business definitely seems to be getting busier. I think it is probably down to awareness of climate change, health concerns as well as animal welfare concerns.”

How would you describe super natural to new customers?

Andrew said: “I would sum up our business as: Relaxed and friendly, with an emphasis on being more ethical and thoughtful towards animals”

Super Natural Café offers a range of vegan dishes from all day breakfasts, hot sandwiches, burgers and curries.

Andrew said: “Our all day breakfasts are a fan favourite among our customers.”

As a fellow vegan, Andrew has firmly cemented the business as a great spot for plant based eating in the Toon.
