Underestimating Kids

“We often greatly underestimate our children’s natural capacities. In fact, we underestimate, or take for granted, rather a lot. Take our physical senses. How many do you have? Most people would say five: hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell. The fact is there are at least nine. They include a…

Could Neurodiversity be a Misnomer?

Neurodiversity is a term that is used to describe the range of differences in human brain function and behavioral traits. Neurodivergent individuals include those with conditions such as ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, and more. It is estimated that neurodiversity affects up to 40% of the population. While neurodiversity has traditionally…

Does School Kill Curiosity?

“The teacher stopped her mid-sentence with, “Zoe, no questions now, please; it’s time for learning.” “It’s not the fault of teachers. They have so many targets to meet.” (Susan Engel, author of The Hungry Mind). Children are curious by nature. Toddlers ask a lot of questions because they want to…

The Reading Wars

Reading had been a source of national pride in New Zealand since 1970, when its students finished first in the world on an international test. Teachers from New Zealand were sent to the U.S., especially, in droves to lead reading professional development teacher trainings and were hailed as gurus. In…

7 Skills Which Successful Kids Have. Here’s how Parents can Teach Them to Their Children.

As an educator and in collaboration with the psychologists on the MI World Education team, we’ve found that there are seven key skills that separate successful kids from “the ones who struggle.” I want to share these skills with parents so they can help their own children thrive. Children need…

A Spiritual Atheist

Why are festivals like Burning Man, Enid, and even going back so far as Woodstock so wildly popular? Is it really just all about sex, drugs, and rock and roll? Or are our youth desperately seeking a sense of purpose, meaning, and sense of connection? In recent years, there has…

I Can’t Homeschool — How Can Multiple Intelligence (MI) Learning Help my Kid in School?

Homeschooling may be an option for some families, but it isn’t right — or isn’t possible- for everyone. For parents who are looking for ways to help their children thrive in school, Multiple Intelligence (MI) can be a great tool. MI identifies nine different types of intelligence, which means that there is no one “right” way to learn. This flexible approach can be helpful for students who struggle…

Striving to be a “Disrupter in Education” — but also an Ardent Teacher Supporter?

While I am a vocal critic of today’s educational model, it’s imperative to reframe the conversation from “us vs. them” to “one team.” We are not at odds with teachers. Most of the educators on our team are either presently teaching or have been teachers. No teacher -ever- went into…

Great article!

Great article! You really make some valid points about how important it is to allow young adults to find their own path in life. It can be so easy for parents and teachers to push kids into a certain direction, but sometimes that can be really damaging. Giving children and teens autonomy is so critical to being ble to trust their own capacities and beliefs.
