Emma Watson responds to criticism over Vanity shoot

Feminism is a topic that has changed through generations and has been approached in a variety of ways. So what is a feminist? and what makes them a feminist? You are a feminist if you believe in the equal treatment of the sexes; in no way does it mean ‘to put down men’.(The British Library, 2017) In the simplest way, it means to stand for the rights that we want women to be able to have in society and be treated as equals.

Saying this, actress Emma Watson often speaks out about her views regarding feminism as an issue and will often attend speeches. Last week she was criticised for a photo-shoot she did with Vanity Fair. The pictures that were published were beautiful, but for being a self confessed feminist, she was judged on one specific image that was released. The picture was showing her dressed in a see through top that reveals too much of herself. Some people referred to her as being a hypocrite. Twitter users accused her of not being able to keep her morals.

Despite all of the negative opinions given on twitter over the past couple of days, there has been a lot of supportive messages being sent over the social media platform. People have been commenting on the true meaning behind the term feminism. Everyone can interpret it differently, but this is the point various people were trying to make. It is said that feminism is how you take it, how you make it what you want and are able to express what being a woman means to you.

More specifically users to extreme offence to the way that her breasts were exposed in a ‘provocative’ way. However, Emma stood up against the hate again and shared her view on the subject.

Emma claimed that “Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with, it’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, and it’s about equality.”

“I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.”

The way people have been criticising something that was meant to be artistic and empowering, is showing the complete opposite of what feminism is meant to be. YouGov.com’s latest survey found that most women reject the label because feminists are seen as too extreme. The survey said that 32 percent of women call themselves feminists, but 45 percent do not. Some of these people do not even know what feminism really is. (What the world thinks — Feminism Available at: https://yougov.co.uk/ Accessed: 6 March 2017). This is why we need spokespeople like Emma Watson. She is a figure that is always in the spotlight and can use her fame to do something good for the world.

“For the record, feminism, by definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals.” — Emma Watson
