10 positive affirmations to use this year

A little positive thinking truly does go a long way

I’ve been using affirmations for the last year, helping me get over small obstacles and huge life changes. They’re short, positive statements that put you in conscious control of your feelings and thoughts. With so many little subconscious thoughts running around our heads every day, it’s really worth taking the time to speak aloud some positive statements.

1. I approve of who I am

When we compare ourselves to others, we always put our own achievements down. You’re not anyone else but you, and no-one is as good at being you than you are!

2. Situations will always work out for the better, even though it doesn’t seem it at the time

When something is getting you down, it’s natural to think that things will end badly. But remember that sometimes bad things need to end to allow the good things to happen. It’s all about balance, and it’s how you open yourself up for the good things to pour in that matters.

3. I surround myself with friends who love me for who I am

Friendships aren’t always easy, and unfortunately it sometimes takes some bad experiences to realise who’s with you and who’s against you. Affirm that you’ll surround yourself with positive people who’ll encourage you to be the best person you can be.

4. I am smart and kind

Be nice to yourself. You’re always growing as a person, learning what you can cope with and what you can’t. Cut yourself some slack once in a while! We’re not perfect. Affirm that you’re smart and kind, and you are a good person.

5. My fears will not interrupt my sleep

Are you lying awake at night, thinking about all the stuff you need to get done? Worried about things that have happened that day? It’s one of the main causes for sleepness nights and it’s so unneccessary. Our brains are working overtime more than ever before, yet a good night’s sleep is vital for our health and general wellbeing. Say this affirmation every night to help you let go of your thoughts until the morning.

6. The solution to my problem is within me, and I will find it

The only person who can change things in your life is you, and the answers to your problems are right there within you. You just need to search for them.

7. I won’t let small minds convince me my dreams are too big

They’re the ones standing by, telling you what you’re trying to do is too difficult. I once told an old boss that the next time they saw me, I’d be working for Ogilvy. They laughed, which really surprised me. But it taught me one important thing — never let the people who laugh in the face of your dreams be the end of them.

8. I am stronger than any excuse

Excuses — how many of those do you make a day? We’re all guilty. And sometimes it’s ok to make them. But if you find yourself dragged down by excuses, affirm that you’re better than that. You can get that piece of work started, you do have time to do that thing nagging in the back of your mind. And on the other end of the spectrum, you can say no. ‘No’ is a complete sentence.

9. I am never alone

You really aren’t. There are people out there willing to help you or pick you up when you’re feeling a bit bleh. You might feel lonely, but you’re never alone. Affirm this and you’ll start feeling tonnes more fulfilled.

10. I am in charge of how I feel and today I’m choosing happiness

This is one of the most important affirmations I’ve been speaking daily for the last few months. We’re all too quick to start the day annoyed about something, and it means that we’re being too quick to choose our mood. The day might not always be peachy, but start each day choosing happiness and you might just find your mornings are lifted.
