A good quality human hair weave should last for up to two years, if you’re taking good care of it. It’s imperative that you keep your hair extensions clean, or they will become dirty, dry, oily and prone to tangling. Let’s have a look at how you can keep your virgin hair weave looking fresh for as long as possible.

Wash Your Human Hair Weave

Depending on how much you sweat or work out, you will need to regularly wash your hair every seven to fourteen days. Get a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Mix the shampoo with lukewarm water, and gently wash the weave from top to bottom. Get it thoroughly into your hair and in between the braids, and massage your scalp lightly as well. Make sure you don’t rub the shampoo in — just smooth it on without scrubbing, and avoid friction. Rinse your hair, and then use conditioner. The conditioner should sit in your weave for at least three minutes so the hair is softened. Rinse it out thoroughly. After every washing, massage in leave-in conditioner gently to the weave as well as your natural hair.

You should keep your hair weave straight when you’re washing it to avoid matting. Dry the hair gently by blotting it with a micro fiber towel; do not rub your hair, ever! You can dry your hair under a dryer or in the air too, but make sure it’s completely dry so it doesn’t get mold or smell like mildew.

Keep Your Hair Weave Clean Between Washings

You can only wash your weave every one to two weeks, but you can keep it nice and shiny between washings using witch hazel.

How to Comb Your Weave

Your weave is usually sewn onto your real hair, meaning if you drag your comb through your hair roughly, you risk tugging it out. Detangle your weave from the bottom and work your hair up. It’s best to comb your weave when it’s wet, and only use a wide-toothed comb to gently work out the tangles from it.

Don’t Scratch Your Weave with Your Fingernails

The fact that you’re not washing your hair as regularly will make your scalp itch more often. But don’t use your fingernails to scratch at it! That will just irritate your scalp, and could even end up with you getting scabs. Instead, use a scalp soother or tea tree oil for relief. Scratching will simply cause you to have to remove your weave quicker.

Do: Use Anti-Bacterial Weave Spray

A good anti-bacterial weave spray is necessary to kill any bacteria in your weave, as well as to keep it fresh and detangled. Use it once a day. It’s especially useful for twisted and braided weaves, or one that’s worn in locks.

Don’t: Use Oils.

They can cause matting and tangles as they weigh down the weave. Use small amounts of argon oil if your hair loses its shine.

Take Care When You Sleep

Wrap your hair up loosely using a satin scarf when going to sleep. Never go to sleep with a wet weave, since that can cause moldiness.
