What should you do if your cigars become victims of beetles?

When you begin to spend your free time enjoying cigars, it’s important that you understand fully the ways in which you should be caring for your collection. Here at Cheap Humidors, we hope to guide you along the way and offer answers to the many questions you’re sure to develop over time. One question that seems to stand out among the lot is, ‘what should you do if your cigars become victims of beetles?’ While the answer may not seem clear at first, we hope that you’ll soon feel well versed in the art of protecting your stogies.

One of the keys to keeping your cigars free of any beetle activity, is keeping the humidity to temperature ratio at an agreeable level for your cigars. Keeping the temperature between 62 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity between 60 and 70% is the ideal area you want to aim for. Not only will this prevent mold, which is a whole other set of problems, but it also deters beetles. Typically, a beetle infestation in your cigar collection is caused by the storage chamber being too hot and humid, attracting the vermin.

What’s important to remember is that even if your cigars are infested, you still can save them. The only way to get rid of the beetles and the larva completely is by exposing them to the coldest temperatures you can. If you see one of your cigars has been infected, it’s safe to assume that all of them are in which case, you should treat them all as such. Take all of the cigars out, place them in a sealed plastic bag and let them rest in the freezer for two to three days while you clean out your humidor. Doing so will kill not only the beetles but also the larva and will prevent the problem from spreading even more.

Be sure to place the cigars in your refrigerator for a day in order to prevent the shock of the temperature change when putting them back into the humidor. This sudden change in temperature could cause the wrappers to split and that’s the last thing you want. Don’t forget that when you’re cleaning out your humidor you want to wipe it gently with a cloth dampened by distilled water. This will clean it without harming the wood or making the cigars flavor change once exposed to heavy cleaning products.

One of the most important parts about proper cigar care is being sure that they are stored in a proper humidor. Should you find yourself in the market for your first one, or simply a new one, feel free to visit us on our website at http://www.cheaphumidors.com/humidors.html for more information.
