We Get It. Racism Is A Problem. Now Shut Up!
Look, I know racism is a terrible issue that affects a lot of people. BUT, it seems that so much of the focus on the left is the issue of racism. There is this hyper focused obsession with racism as if this is the only type of discrimination or oppression or hurt that could possibly exist and to even imply that there are other issues that can be focused on is in itself seen as racism. And, despite the title, no, we shouldn’t necessarily shut up about it, but surely we can look at a wide variety of issues, including, for example, class? We seldom see the issue of class being brought up anymore. In fact it almost seems like class is assumed by the colour of a person’s skin…that the darker the skin, the lower on the rung when it comes to class. There seems to be little acceptance of the fact that there is no shortage of, say, white people, who are scraping the bottom of the barrel, or that there are a wide variety of people from other ethnic groups that are doing pretty darn well economically. Why have we abandoned this cause? How did skin colour get to be the obsession over whether someone is able to put food on their table or not regardless of the colour of their skin? Can we please get back to this? Can we please start focusing a wee bit more on people across the board who might be suffering for any number of reasons? I know Black Lives Matter. But what about the life of a poor white guy addicted to meth and living in a run down trailer park in Wyoming who has had repeated run-ins with the law and can’t get a stable job? Does this dude not matter? And if the answer is no…the question is why??
