What we think we need to be doing and why it’s making us miserable.

While social media is a fun way to stay connected to your gal-pals and BFFs when everyone is apart, it can also be a cause of unease and unnecessary stress. Social media that was once used to stay connected to people simply for connection event planning, and sharing fun experiences has evolved into morale dampening monster. Until I started my freshman year of college a few years ago, I was obsessive over who was doing what, how many likes I received on Facebook and Instagram, if I was posting too much or not enough on and on and on. I was always looking for a cool experience so I could post a photo on social media. I missed out on so many beautiful moments because of my goal to get the perfect picture to show my amazing life to friends on social media. It made me feel like a failure when I felt my profile was failing in comparison to my comrades. The constant expectations placed upon social media made me flat out “salty” and depressed.

During my freshman year of college, life began to move too fast to document everything without putting myself at risk of being hit by a bus while walking. It was during my freshman year that I realized that people are to worried about their social media problems and goals to care about your awesome photos! I realized that social media should be a fun outlet to express fun experiences as they happened to the people I love, and not a competition for whose life is better! Since that revelation, I often set my phone down and live in the moment. A lifestyle change that has improved my life for the better! I am so much happier, carefree, and don’t feel like life is passing me by while I stare at the screen of iPhone!

So give this lifestyle a try! Feel free to share your experiences of living a life less affected by social media in the comment area!
