Recently a coworker asked me “Q, what is your secret to success at work?” As I reflected on this, I realized that not only is it important to have a vision and work hard, it is equally important to have the support you need.

Are you surrounding yourself with the right people to help you at work?

Below are questions to reflect on regarding your tribe to help with work success.

1) Direct Manager: do you have someone that has a vision for your team? Is she or he showcasing how your role is critical to that success, guiding you while also helping you prioritize your initiatives?

2) Role Model: who is your inspiration? do you have someone that you can look up to and/or follow a similar career path that you can identify with?

3) Executive Sponsor: do you have a leader that is willing to advance your career; someone in the organization that has the ability to represent you when you are not in the room and convince others that you are the best person for the next promotion?

4) Mentor: do you have someone you can meet regularly to help advise you on the next stage in your career? Someone who is there to listen, encourage and provide resources on how you can improve yourself as a professional.

5) Mentee: are you giving back your time to help others grow in their career? I personally have learned more about myself when I am mentoring others. I learn about my leadership style, how I give feedback and overall communication.

6) Work spouse: do you have your go-to colleague that is your closest and trusted friend at work? This person offers support, gives you the ability to vent when necessary and celebrates you.

Throughout your journey, you may have multiple people in these roles to help you. Remember, we do not get anywhere alone.

Do you have at least one person in each role to help you? Are there other roles in your work tribe?

I would love to hear from you. What other roles have led you to your success?

Until next time -

Cheers, “Q”
