If you’re looking for a way to fix a problem, you are a true founder. Founders are fixers! If you want to fix a problem, you’re likely to create the answer yourself.

Focus makes the heart grow fonder. There’s nothing more satisfying than giving something all of your energy and watching it blossom.

Stay true to yourself. Don’t let the patriarchy inform your idea of what kind of CEO to be. You are your own boss.

Build a three year roadmap on scaling the business. We often build a “three-year roadmap” for new brands/product launches, so we can strategically plot out the game plan to scale after proof of concept. This starts with the key plan of growth, based on a well thought out channel and distribution strategy. We factor in key supply chain stages to ensure volume capacities to match anticipated growth levels along with redundancies. Know your industry. Before you start anything at all, ask yourself what kind of authority you want to be.

Even if your industry isn’t competitive, make sure you do your research. You wouldn’t get into the furniture industry and pay athletes to become your brand ambassadors. Knowing your industry also means knowing what you’re up against. At EFFYDESK, we understand that your desk needs to last over ten years, at least! We’ve done our research, and we know that many models on the market only have a single motor. Though a single motor is almost half the price of a dual motor, it’s not durable and won’t stand the test of time. …

Know that you and your team are more important to the success of your company in the first year or so than your product. Investors first invest behind management teams, then products. They want to see your infectious passion, commitment (time/financial). You need really smart people around you. People you can trust, listen to, and can act quickly.

You don’t need a fancy kitchen or fancy ingredients to pull off some delicious dishes!

When I first started, I had 1 big mixing bowl, a few forks and spoons, and a couple of pots and pans I inherited from my mom! I used store-brand almond milk, frozen berries, and pre squeezed lemon juice. And guess what, people still loved my recipes! These days, I’ve got a bit more to work with in the kitchen, but all of my recipes can still be made with simple tools and ingredients.

Be bold and take risks. Leaders don’t become leaders because they stayed in their comfort zones. If you aim to become a leading, successful lifestyle brand, you will have to take risks, eventually make mistakes — as well as learn from these — and have in mind that there are no miracle formulas.

Go to market and test and learn. Be nimble enough to pivot if needed. As my brand is growing and throughout COVID-19, we were able to survive because we adapted quickly to the changing marketplace, making facemasks at our sock manufacturer, creating at-home workouts with our fitness influencers, creating safe-shopping pop-up experiences and investing more in our D2C channel.
