It’s your life.

“Why?” She asked, bracing herself for the answer she had long anticipated.

“Because I can’t watch you destroy your own life any longer. I can’t always be here to pick you up when all you’re going to do is tear yourself down again in a week.” It was the hardest thing he had ever said. He felt like he was breaking up with her but they weren’t even dating. She was just his friend, but she was his best friend for a number of years.

They drifted apart after they both chose different paths; she chose a path of destruction while he chose to build a beautiful life. No matter how much he tried to convince her to follow him and they could build lives of wonder and achievement and guide each other to be their best, she always went back.

She was addicted to a life of drugs, law breaking, and meeting all the wrong people. She could be in a room with a million attractive successful people and she would find the one man who has done nothing with his life.

He has given up trying to be the friend to save her when she obviously didn’t want saving. She needed it and she knew it, but she would never take it. She was too stubborn to ever take a helping hand. Not even if she were hanging off a cliff and he reached his hand down for her to grab would she take it; she would just let go.

He realizes now that, no matter how hard he tries, she will never follow the right path until she decides it’s time. But for now, it is time for him to let her go before he drags him down with her. Letting go his best friend is the hardest thing he has ever had to do, but he knows it’s what’s best.

“I’m sorry, but I have to stop trying to help you when you don’t want it. I can’t fall apart with you. It’s your life and I shouldn’t be trying to change it for you.”

She was crying now. She knew he was right but she couldn’t help it. It’s her life and it’s her decisions. She knows it’ll be hard, but she knows that he is right. She isn’t ready to change; she doesn’t think she will be ready for a long time.
