I’m Mike Mayou and This is How I Work

- Location: Duluth, MN
- Current Gig: MIS/Marketing Student at the University of MN Duluth, College Music Director at KUMD 103.3FM, Technology Intern at ISD709
- One word that describes how you work: Diligently
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Why?
I can’t live without Gmail/Google Drive, Facebook, or Spotify because I would be less productive without them. Facebook is one of the most important tools that I use to network and connect with people, along with being a way to find out about events that are happening around town. Gmail and Google Drive help me communicate and connect on a day-to-day basis and Spotify is great for my music needs.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut/life hack?
In order to save time on tasks that are repeated on a monthly, weekly, or daily basis, take time to determine the most efficient way to complete those tasks. For example, I publish top charts at KUMD on a weekly basis and I took a few hours one day to create a spreadsheet with formulas to help chart in minutes instead of hours.
What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else? What’s your secret?
I can give a speech or talk in front of groups on the spot by improvising and collecting information/talking points from the venue and those around me. Forgetting about my nerves and instead thinking about what I’m going to say helps me focus before or while giving speeches.
What do you listen to while you work?
Pretty much anything from classic rock to the most modern indie music. If I’m trying to concentrate and get lots of work done, I like to listen to lyric-less music like Ratatat. I also listen to KUMD regularly, especially when I’m working.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Be yourself- don’t try to be someone or something you aren’t.
Where do you find inspiration and new ideas?
I find inspiration and get new ideas from my colleagues and others around me in school, at work, and in the community.

What’s your favorite quote?
“Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible” — Frank Zappa.
