After that, there as not a chance I’d be speaking to anyone. That’s how my shyness works. The moment attention is drawn to my silence, it’s as if all systems shut down; my throat closes and my mind won’t string thoughts together.

I struggle with a similar helplessness: I “can’t” speak because “my brain shuts off” when I’m scared or I’m the center of attention. It’s been a long road of learning not to be scared. Writing is a refuge. A place where my mind can relax, hear itself, and express itself.
