Gary, If there is any place in the world to learn about empathy, it is going to be in the healthcare industry. In healthcare, people are forced into positions where they have to be empathetic in the most vulnerable times of people’s lives and they have this amazing ability to do it over and over again.
I’ve worked in healthcare for 15 years and obsessed with this work after a patient one day asked me, “Do you like your job?”. It turned out that she asked this to everyone who went into her room because the people taking care of her made her feel like they were there “just to collect a paycheck.” The point is that people can FEEL when you are disingenuous and are there just to collect a paycheck. I also believe that empathy is a natural human function, it’s just extremely easy to become distracted from our natural ability to recognize it and do it.
If we can realize our natural ability to make an impact others and appreciate when others have an impact on us, I think we can together create a better world. I believe this so strongly that I would do this work for free in a heartbeat — if you promise to make this a big deal for your teams.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this post. The world needs it.
