On fascism in America: Beware of fascism masquerading as patriotism
.It’s a scene we’ve witnessed time and again throughout the course of history , the circumstances are as eerily familiar as the sound of goose-stepping boots echoing throughout the streets of mid 20th century Europe and just as chilling . It’s a scenario that never ends well ; its aftermath is invariably tragic .
. It occurs when a nations people feel threatened , during tough economic times , or when a nation begins to feel its decent from greatness . A populist exploiting the nations fear and desperation emerges promising renewed prosperity and military might . Large rallies are held . Arenas , packed with crowds of frenzied cult-like followers swept up in a nationalistic fervor , reverberate with the chants of the names of the nations and their new presumed savior . To applause and cheers , he tells the fanatical crowd that their nation is the greatest , that only he will keep them safe , and that he will restore the country to its former grandeur. . Suddenly, the mood darkens as they he warns them that there are enemies abroad who wish to do them harm and that immigrants are ruining the country . The crowd responds with boos and hisses . He goes on to tell them that there are enemies within too ; they work for the state , they are members of the press , or they are critical of him which means they are disloyal to the nation . Outraged , the furious crowd calls for their imprisonment or expulsion .
. What follows is a near blueprint for the inception of totalitarianism . The freely elected government begins a disinformation campaign. , the press is discredited , a select unpopular group is scapegoated , the opposition is silenced and the judiciary is stacked in favor of the new regime . Next , an attack occurs , enemies of the state are blamed and absolute power is seized in the name of national security.
. The scene could be easily be fascist Italy , Nazi Germany or some newly emerged state in the near future — but it’s not . It is America and the leader is the president of the United States. The crowd is white , middle and working class American, they are messianic believing. that their president is some kind of anti- politician savior who really will restore the nations bounty and preserve it power . These Americans aren’t right wing extremists , they are average Americans , otherwise good people who are now willing to accept some form of a dictatorship as long as they feel safe and get what they want . They have forgotten history and are ignorant of the principles upon which this nation is based . They will welcome this new fascism , this New Americanism , because it will appear cloaked in patriotism and espousing Christian values .
. If you don’t think that this can happen in America consider this ; an online survey by YouGov found that 29% of Americans would be fine with a military coup while only 41% would be against it . When asked if they would accept a military takeover if the government violated the constitution the number in favor of a military coup rose to 43 % for it and only 29% against it .
So much for the land of the free and the home of the brave , so much for a nation where freedom reigns, of government by the people and for the people , and what a sad day for the many who gave their lives fighting. the tyrannies which threatened our very existence. The pity of this is manifold ; prosperity won’t be regained , our freedoms won’t return , and many will excluded from the new order while others will be considered expendable . Pity the youngest generation and generations yet to come too , for they will be left with the chaos , they will have to rebuild from rubble , and they will have to restore this nation freedom and greatness .
. What has gone so very wrong ? America has seen much worse ; we’ve suffered harder economic times , had greater threats to our security, and had our republic tested by civil war , yet we’ve persevered . So why have we become so soft , so willing to throw it all away ? Why have we lost our willingness to fight ? The answer may be simple . We are suffering a crisis of faith having lost hope for a better future for ourselves and our children. . We have stood by watching as our government has helped. American corporations trade our jobs for a larger profit margin . Our futures have been sold to a handful of greedy oligarchs who posses more than they. can ever spend . Once a production based economy , we became a service based economy and now a sharing economy . The workers
of America have been deemed obsolete. . Meanwhile, we’ve lost faith in our governments power to serve and lead us . And , as we witnessed the American dream disintegrate , we lost our will to fight and have become. willing to accept that New Americanism .
