I recently took part in a design challenge by Zomato where the challenge was to design a Careers page for their target candidates, which is easily comprehensible and speaks Zomato . The piece expands on the design process and my learnings about webpage design and Zomato as a company.

The Challenge

Great people make great organisations. A well-designed,
informative and appealing careers page is key to connecting with the right candidates.

The webpage should:

  • Help candidates find and apply for the right roles, in their chosen location
  • Give visibility on the hiring process
  • Showcase the experience, environment and culture effectively. Give candidates a taste of what’s it like to work at Zomato by glancing through the Careers page.

Let’s tackle the challenge

So, the first phase was Research. I divided my research into two parts.

1. Get an understanding of Careers pages
Basically I wanted to understand what should be the structure of the page. Analyze how some of the major brands are creating engaging experiences for people visiting their websites. So I visited and took screenshots of some of the Fortune 150 companies, tech companies in and outside India as well as some design agencies. Some of the notable ones are Airbnb, Microsoft, Flock, Slack, Facebook, HackerRank, Lollypop Design Studio, JioSaavn.

2. Know about Zomato, their vision, experience of Zomans
Zomans live by some values and most importantly they try and stick to the basics. Following links help me a lot in understanding their values, mission, culture, and employee perspective — LinkedIn, Zomato Blog, Twitter.

Life at Zomato

Analysis

Based on the above research I concluded that most of the pages have common elements (not necessarily in the same order) such as:

  • Mission and Vision of the company
  • Colorful, cheerful pictures of employees, offices, illustrations when needed
  • Culture, perks, benefits
  • Job openings categorized by departments, location etc. Most of the times a Call to Action button to open a different page for openings. This button is ideally placed at the top and bottom of the page.
  • Employee testimonials

So I planned to show these sections along with another section — Hiring Process which was there in the problem statement.

Diving into Design

Zomato had already shared a resource kit with the contestants which included their logo, color palette and fonts. We had to design the webpage on a 1440px artboard with 12 column grid. We were to free to explore visual styles but the design should have been consistent with the tone of Zomato’s brand. To understand the design style I had a look at their App, iconography style.

  • At the top, I mentioned the Mission of Zomato. I personally believe that if you look forward to work with an organization, your vision should align with that of the organization’s. After that I mentioned 3 stats which emphasize the reach and impact Zomato has created.
  • A picture is worth a thousand words. In order to showcase the culture and atmosphere of Zomato, I created a collage and placed it above the fold of the page so that any candidate visiting their website get’s a glimpse of the company without even scrolling.
  • Career Opportunities — The main section which has job openings categorized by Departments. Initially all rows are collapsed. User can filter results by selecting relevant department and location.
  • The hiring process — Since the no. of rounds may vary for different profiles, years of experience etc. I depicted a general scenario with the help of icons which match Zomato’s style of design.
  • Meet the Zomans — There’s no one better able to tell the story of an organization than its employees. I created this section in a creative manner, with each employee thinking about his/her favorite dish. Each testimonial displayed as a horizontal scrollable container.

In Conclusion…

What could have I done better

  • I find my design a little bit dull because I used the light grey color as the background. The reason for choosing this was Zomato’s Website uses this theme. So to align with the current design I colored it grey.
  • I also feel I could have used more images/color to make the page more vibrant.

All in all it was a great learning experience for me. Following articles inspired me to write this piece:
