With regard to management there are many many cases in which, e.g., engineers are promoted over and over again (sometimes to their dismay) into top tier management, including CIO, CTO, and yes CEO. I don’t know what the statistics are but it’s probably true that many of them reach a plateau before CEO. Despite the Peter principle however, the ones that ultimately reach the top are usually well suited to run the company.
