Nameless Savory Congee in Taipei, Taiwan

In Taiwan, you can enjoy a variety of savory congees, ranging from a hearty version with whole slices of milkfish belly to a simple and plain version with finely chopped ingredients. There are two main types of porridge commonly found in Taiwan — Cantonese-style, where the rice grains are completely dissolved, and Taiwanese-style, which retains intact rice grains.

This time, I tried the authentic Taiwanese-style savory congee. Located away from the downtown of Taipei City, a 15-minute walk from the Dalongdong Baoan Temple, the eatery is full of local foodies. The setup is simple with basic tables and chairs, and two stoves heating two large pots — one filled with savory congee and the other with heating oil. As I approached, the friendly owner promptly asked for my order. I opted for the savory congee and a plate of fried items, which were served quickly.

As more customers arrived, there was an unspoken consensus to order tofu, but unfortunately, it was sold out. Taking mental note, I decided to try the tofu on my next visit and understand why it’s a favorite among regulars.

The most surprising aspect was the clear broth with a rich flavor. Finely chopped celery and carrots, combined with fried shallots, garlic crisp, and a small amount of minced meat, created a harmonious blend of vegetable and spice flavors.

The fresh shrimp was thinly coated in starch and deep-fried. With the head and shell removed, it was convenient to eat. Sweet and spicy sauce added moisture to the fried items, and a touch of tender ginger shreds enhanced the flavor. If it weren’t for wanting to try other snacks, I would have ordered another plate!
