Three truths about the internet life I am no longer willing to tolerate
- Skype calls are fun at first, useful when necessary, but are no way to live a life.
- It makes writing harder. 80% of the difficulty of writing is doing the hard thinking. You can shortcut this process by road-testing and iterating ideas through conversations. You don’t get to have this when you’re by your lonesome with your laptop all day.
- It’s too easy to disappear.
Do not disappear. Ever. Especially when you make mistakes, fail, and feel like it’s better to disappear than “make excuses.”
Sure, you can keep in touch online by writing blog posts, publishing newsletters, and tweeting and Facebooking… But there’s a reason your friends’ life updates look so perfect — they’re heavily edited, and infrequent.
Which means it’s too easy to disappear when life sucks. This is not a problem when you’re forced to see people in the office everyday, whether you like it or not. It doesn’t matter — it will force you to get out of bed. And that’s what’s important.
Because when you’re in bed, you’re dead. (Tuesdays with Morrie)
