骑虎难下

Type of idiom: chengyu (成语), four-character set phrase

Definition: If you ride a tiger, it’s hard to get off (idiom); figuratively impossible to stop halfway. Source: CC-CEDICT.

Examples

我在坐过山车的时候真的很害怕,但没办法,骑虎难下。

你的计划有很大的风险,如果执行得不够好,我们会骑虎难下。

如果共和党没有从开始一直支持川普的谬论方案,也许可以避免目前的骑虎难下的情境。

Origin

This chengyu comes from a verse in quintessential Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai’s 留別广陵诸公 (Parting Poem for Guang Ling’s Gentlemen):

骑虎不敢下,攀龙忽堕天

Translation: “Ride a tiger not daring to dismount, climb atop a dragon and suddenly fall from the sky”

Dear Bill,
亲爱的比尔,

When I walked into this office just now I felt the same sense of wonder and respect that I felt four years ago. I know you will feel that, too.
