Exploring the Android World: My Andela ALC Success Story

My first contact with Andela was during the female cohort application. A very good friend of mine saw it as an opportunity for me to explore the IT world and therefore informed me to apply for the program.

Normally, I would have rejected it because it had to do with programming. I had the opportunity of learning C+ and C++ during my undergraduate days. But the experience was not pleasant for me because I just couldn’t understand the concept. However, I decided to apply, not minding the fact that one of the criteria to qualify was that I should have completed my National Youth Service. Of course, I wasn’t selected. I was yet to start serving.

Few months later, I saw an advert about a program sponsored by Andela, Udacity and Google. This time around I was qualified, but needed to take a short test. The program involved undertaking training on Android App Development via Andela Android Learning Community (ALC).

I applied and wrote the short test of which I came out successful. Sincerely, I was happy when I received a congratulatory mail from Andela few weeks later. For some reason I was very eager to venture into programming.

Was it just because it was yet another opportunity coming my way?

Whatever the reason was, I’m actually glad I did!

The learning platform in Udacity was wonderful. My instructors; Katherine, Kunal and Lyla simplified the topics which made learning fun. I went through my classes and projects with my wonderful team, ALC South East 6, the best team in the South East Zone. The Andelian spirit was also evident in our facilitators. In fact! It was during these 3–4 months beginner’s level training that I knew I had a passion for designs.

I am indeed grateful to Andela and Google for the opportunity. The journey has started and I believe it will end in grand style.
