Water cooled chiller System
A water-cooled chiller system is a refrigeration system designed to cool buildings, industrial processes, or equipment by using water as the heat transfer medium. These systems consist of key components, including a compressor, evaporator, condenser, and cooling tower.
The process begins with the compressor, which pressurizes a low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant gas. This compressed gas is then directed to the condenser, where it releases heat and becomes a high-pressure, high-temperature gas. In a water-cooled system, the hot refrigerant is not cooled by air but by water. This is achieved by running the hot refrigerant through a heat exchanger where water is used to absorb the heat and lower the refrigerant’s temperature.
The now-liquid refrigerant flows through an expansion valve, which reduces its pressure and temperature. It then enters the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the surrounding air, water, or process fluid. This heat absorption cools the desired space or equipment.
Water-cooled chiller systems are preferred in applications where water is readily available and energy efficiency is crucial. They are known for their ability to provide precise temperature control and are commonly used in larger, more demanding cooling applications. Additionally, they are often employed in conjunction with cooling towers to dissipate the heat absorbed from the refrigerant.
