Two Building-Collapse Tragedies in Two Consecutive Days in Jos and Abuja, Nigeria

In Jos, a two-storey school building collapsed while in Abuja another two-storey residential building collapsed after twenty-four hours.

Black Friday had trended on X following the sad, unfortunate incident of Friday, July 12, 2024 (in Jos, Plateau State). Before that shock could die down, another similar tragic incident filtered in, this time from the nation’s capital, Abuja.

One could say without fear of contradiction that it was a rather tragic tale regrettably progressing from a Black Friday to a Black Saturday and to a Black Weekend.

This is practically beyond belief in a nation faced with multiple economic, social, structural, security and systemic challenges. Nigeria, the West African sub-regional giant appears to be a giant in calamities too.

If not, how could ‘two tragic building collapses’ be recorded in just less than 24 hours?

Some hours earlier, according to reports by The Punch newspaper: rescue efforts were yet ongoing at the Abuja site of a building collapse…
