Travel Ban Overturned
#So-calledPresidentTrump disses Republican Appointed Federal Court Justice.
While I’m pleased to see the travel ban overturned, as there have been no fatal terror attacks attributed to terrorists from the ban affected countries from folks managed under the ‘old’ vetting process; I’m concerned with Trump’s reaction to this turn of events:
“The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!” Trump said on Twitter. It is unusual for a president to attack a member of the judiciary, which is an independent arm of the U.S. government.
Unusual for a president, but not unexpected by me from #So-calledPresidentTrump. Let’s take a quick look at U.S. District Judge James Robart of Seattle Washington.
Robart, 69, was appointed to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2003 and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 17, 2004 by a 99–0 vote.
A republican nominee, voted for by every senator present. Bipartisan support, something seen so rarely now. Seems like a ‘real’ judge to me.
So #So-calledPresidentTrump starts his tenure off by constantly undermining the press. For example, he continues to describe an error, retracted promptly by the press person off twitter, as ‘fake news’:
Trump then launched into another attack on an erroneous report that a bust of Martin Luther King. Jr. had been removed from the Oval Office.
“It turned out that that was fake news,” he said.
It was never a news story: The claim about King bust was contained in a pool report — and tweeted out by some social media users — but was corrected within minutes of release.
What #So-calledPresidentTrump describes isn’t what ‘fake news’ is. Journalists are human and will make mistakes; that they are promptly corrected is one key item that marks a real news outlet from a fake news item. #So-calledPresidentTrump needs to recognize this and stop tearing down the press.
#So-calledPresidentTrump does not appear to be content to destroy faith in the fourth estate, but now is tearing at our judiciary. It’s fine to disagree, but it is wrong to disrespect a sitting Judge whose bonafides are, in many way, better than #So-calledPresidentTrump’s.
If you find #So-calledPresidentTrump disrespectful, it is intended to be. He’s earned it. If he’d like me to stop, he can apologize to U.S. District Judge James Robart, and I’ll be happy to just call him President Trump again.
#So-calledPresidentTrump campaigned on implementing ‘extreme vetting’. While I personally think the old vetting process was sufficient, I do not believe there sufficient justification to simply ‘stop’ the folks already in process. There was no identified threat. Recent fatal terror attacks I am aware of, in the US or even in the EU, have been committed by folks already on various watch lists who would not have passed the old vetting process. If #So-calledPresidentTrump wants to re-work the process, that’s fine. And once he has that reviewed, passed, and in place, future refugees can go through that process. That would be a responsible and respectful way to approach change in this area.
