I recall reading articles sounding very much like this around 1995, about the World Wide Web.

Particularly memorable were predictions of how the Web would upend global dictatorships since of course no one could possibly control it, censor it, direct it.

Political protesters would be able to evade detection since everyone is anonymous on the World Wide Web.

Superstition and rumor would be extinct since accurate information would be at everyone’s fingertips.

Its not that the internet failed; It just becomes another arena, another battleground where the the struggles for human dignity and freedom are played out.
