I see a parallel with the criticisms of American Christianity, which distorts the communitarian ethos of the Gospel message into a self-centered personal salvation plan. IMO, this is what allows the American fundamentalist to so easily meld with the consumer-capitalist mentality.

Its also true that the limitation of the individual consumerist model of social justice is that it allows us to love an imaginary oppressed victim, instead of the real, messy complex person.Buying a BLM tee shirt is fundamentally different than meeting with, and interacting with, the actual victims of police injustice.
