You’ve touched on something I have been pondering as well.

How the Maker movement, robotics, and 3D printing will affect how we make and consume things.

I can see where mass production becomes less efficient than simply downloading a code which feeds into a local 3D printer.

It could be cheaper to, for example, buy shoes from a local cobbler who uses a public domain design, rather than buying one pair of a million fabricated half a world away.
