History of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti

The vineyard was operated by the local monastery, The Abbey of Saint Vivant in Vosne, in the 13th century, when Domaine de la Romanee-Conti was founded. The Romans are said to have been the first to cultivate the grapes, hence the name “Romanée.”

The vineyard was a fraction of its current size at the time. It was purchased by the Croonembourge family in the 1600s, who also extended it by purchasing the region known as La Tâche.

The vineyard was purchased by the haughty Prince of Conti in the 1700s. He not only gave his name to the property and the wine it produced, but he also refused to share a single bottle of Romanee-Conti vintages with anybody, including close friends and relatives.

The winery has been run by the Duvault-Blochet family since the mid-nineteenth century. They bought more acreage, resulting in the current eight DRC vineyards, and evolved the company into the world-renowned winery it is today.

Most desired wine in the world

The vines at Domaine de la Romanee-Conti are situated on some of the best wine-growing land in the world. Not only are all of their wines classified as Grand Cru, but their vineyards are also designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. When you consider the winery’s history and status, it’s easy to see why the wine is in such great demand. Regrettably, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti only produces 6000 cases of wine per year, causing demand to skyrocket. The Domaine de la Romanee-Conti has set the record for the most costly wines sold at auction on two occasions. In 2018, two bottles of the 1945 vintage (an extremely rare vintage for obvious reasons) sold for $496,000 and $558,000, respectively.

Popular Classic Wine

The 1945 Romanée-Conti is without a doubt the most popular DRC vintage. In the wine world, this vintage has taken on a near-mythical stature, with some describing it as “timeless perfection” of the gods. Unfortunately, a bottle will set you back half a million dollars — if you can find one at all. Unfortunately, a bottle will likely cost you half a million dollars — and that’s if you can find one.

How to Tell if a Wine Is Fake

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti wine is among the most counterfeited in the world, owing to its exorbitant price. With a little aid from history, it’s not difficult to recognize a fake. Over the years, the vineyard has utilized a variety of labels, bottles, serial numbers, and importers. Before purchasing a bottle, double-check that the label and bottle are historically correct. For example, certain vintages of La Tâche have the circumflex accent (^) while others do not. This type of detail can be a dead giveaway. However, you must research the vintage. Unfortunately, forgeries will become more difficult to spot as demand for DRC wine grows among wealthy Asian customers. If you’re looking for a rare vintage, it’s a good idea to seek advice from an expert before purchasing.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Wine Location

DRC wines are some of the most difficult to purchase. Because just 6000 cases are made each year, supply is extremely limited, while demand is growing. Unless you’re a real VIP with a reservation, it’s also impossible to visit the winery or buy wine on-site. Sotheby’s and Christie’s sell the most famous vintages at auction. Private dealers, on the other hand, frequently post their bottles online for lesser costs. Bottles of DRC can be found all over the internet, though most suppliers are untrustworthy.
