Rybnik is unknown as it is a tiny place, a charming, unforgettable city in the south of Poland. Here is why you should visit Rybnik and put it on your must-see travel lists.

The town square is old but well maintained. “The Parish of Saint Anthony” church is the city Eiffel tower; it’s tall and very extravagant with a huge Pope John Paul statue in front.

I get nostalgic every time I look at photos; I miss the city, the people, the food, and oddly enough the pollution.

The perfect time to visit the city is either The Summer, the Fall, or December. The pollution is less noticeable, and the city is green.

In December, the market square is the highlight: Lights and decorations create a beautiful Christmas display with lots of goodies and music. But you will notice the smog; it’s a thick fog of burnt garbage.

That’s the unfortunate part of this gem of a city, the younger generation is trying to change it, but that will take time.

The city and places I recommend:

Travel

To get to the city from Katowice airport, you need to book a bus, “Tiger Express.” If you book in advance, you get a cheaper deal. It’s a small bus, with not many hours, so I would recommend booking ahead of time.

If you want to take the train, you could spend a few days in Katowice (a more substantial city) and then take the train(or bus) to Rybnik for the day. It’s about a 2-hour ride.

Food

I discovered great pizza, bars, sandwiches, and pirogies: unique coffee shops, and fabulous desserts.

Every corner, you will find something good to eat, to drink, sweet desserts, and good coffee. (Avoid the American chains like KFC, Pizza Hut, and Mcdonalds.)

For tasty pirogies “Dumplings under angles,” across the street you can go to a fantastic coffee shop “Żółty Młynek,” (Translated: Gold Grinder) They also have music nights where you can join and bring an instrument.

Markets

“Biedronka,” (Translated: Lady Bug) is a cheap and affordable place for groceries. I miss shopping there. I could get everything in one store, and be satisfied with the quality for the price.

Also, a charming outdoor market near the “Magistrates Court Housesells excellent local foods and some other finds.

Bars

Lots of nightlife and bars to choose from, it’s all within walking distance so you can bar hop and make it to all of them in one night, or two.

I would recommend “Cadillac Pub (great atmosphere) “Tawerna Pub(Delicious Polish Food and beer selection), and “The Celtic Pub (For music and social).

The Celtic has excellent music, but if you want good Food and Polish beer, go to Tawerna.

Shopping

The city has two shopping malls nearby. “Focus Park is a new mall; it’s decent but pricey. It’s near the center of the square, and it has a cinema where you can enjoy some local polish films or translated Hollywood movies.

Rybnik Plazais just a little outside of the center, but it has more shops and another cinema.

If you’re like me and you prefer the local thrift stores, there are two that I know of, and they have some great finds.

Hermes” has a thrift shop upstairs, and it’s well organized. The other one is near the train station; you will have to ask locals for that one.

Arts and Entertainment

Centered in the city is a live theatre of the arts “Teatr Ziemi Rybnickiej.” But you will find many main stages in Rybnik, lots of free outdoor concerts that pass thru this city.

Even a quint tea cafe, “The White Monkey,” holds local music events and has unique art for display.

Parks and leisure

The public parks are lovely, and “Park tematyczny nad Nacyną” has an impressive artistic theme to it. Also some sports and leisure places like a spa, gym and a pool for your relaxation.

People

Mingle with the locals, they are charming and might invite you over for dinner. You will be surprised at all the English speakers that live and work in this city.

For those interested in teaching abroad, Rybnik has many ESL schools. “Speak Up” is well known, and they have a few all over Poland.

Accommodations

That sums up my insights on this gem of a city if you’re looking for accommodations as a tourist “Apartamenty D20” is new and offers excellent service.

Here are a few more pictures of the unknown must-see city Rybnik. I hope you enjoyed this write up and let me know your thoughts.
