I Gazed at All the Diaper Brands
By Chojnacki Caroline

As a first time mom, I just gazed at all the diaper brands. I have many to choose from, but which ones should I choose? Should I go with organic and eco-friendly brands? Or name brands, like Huggies or Pampers? The snugglers or the swaddlers? The cuteness overload.
One personal fact, I hate fake baby smell on products. Some people love it but I have a sensitive nose and the smell makes my nose itch.
So I looked for diapers that were unscented and I discovered that most of the diaper brands offer many options.
I was shocked at how many diapers I contributed to our landfills. From my baby’s birth to her two months — I already went through a rough estimate of 300 diapers.
I limited the amount, by not changing the wet ones, but the stinky ones — I helped to eliminate waste and this helped us test which diapers had good absorption.
I decided I would buy different brands for the first 2 months of my baby’s life.
I will rank as follows:
Absorption, Easy to use, Affordability and Eco-friendly.
I will use a scale of 10–1:
10–7 Great to Good
6–4 OK to Poor
3 -1 Bad to Terrible.
HUGGIES

This was the first brand that we were introduced to at the hospital. I found Huggies had a great fit, adjustable straps ,they were soft and felt like a thick pair of cotton underwear.
I fell in love with the yellow line indicator that would go blue when the diaper was full. (The Sung & Dry does not have the blue line indicator, it has to be advertised on the box.)
The brand at the hospital had that fake baby smell. When I went to the store I looked for unscented brands that have long lasting protection. Written on the Huggies: Snug and Dry, it advertises a 12-hour absorption promise.
I tested the 12-hour protection during my babies bedtime and I was really impressed with how much this diaper held. I put a new diaper on my baby at 6 pm and then changed her at 6 am (12-hour protection). The diaper was full, and my baby was dry.
On the plus side this brand goes on sale often, it’s more expensive than the other leading brands, so I would suggest watching for sales in your local flyer.
10 Absorption. I had experienced little to no leaks, 12-hour protection .
10 Easy to use. Elastic is adjustable.
6 Affordability. When this product is on sale, it’s worth it.
3 Eco-friendly
Overall 8. Absorption is really good.
PAMPERS

I purchased the sensitive brand, (other boxes did not indicate if they were unscented), and the price was cheaper when I compared it to the other leading brands.
Unfortunately, Pampers is not scent free, not even the sensitive brand. They were soft, cotton like, they had the yellow line indicator. But the absorption pad was thinner when compared to all the Huggies brands.
We had experienced leakage from either side of the legs and up the back of the baby during a “poop explosion”. I learned that if I folded in the frilly part around the legs into the diaper lining, this prevented the leg leaks.
At night time the diaper was good for about 4 hours. I had to change my baby’s clothes, the bed sheets, and her baby bottom often.
For the low-cost price, it’s a decent day time diaper, for quick changes through out the day.
6 Absorption. I changed the diaper often.
7 Easy to use. Soft and adjustable strap.
10 Affordability. One of the lowest prices.
3 Eco-friendly.
Overall 7. Ok absorption, but very affordable.
PARENTS CHOICE BRAND

This brand was disappointing. I just didn’t like them, and I felt the quality was not the greatest.
Even though the box said it was for my babies weight, I found them to be- too big and it leaked from the sides. But once my baby grew into the diaper, the leaks were minimal, which made us happier. And once the diaper fit her, during the nights it could absorb about 9 hours of wetness.
The diaper was thick, not soft, a plastic texture and it smelt like plastic. But on the plus side, it had no fake baby smell and it is affordable.
The price was a few cents lower than Pampers. It was a money saver, but it had poor quality and poor comfort for my baby.
8 Absorption. No leaks once it fit.
6 Easy to use. Adjustable strap, but bulky.
10 Affordability. Cheap
3 Eco-friendly.
Overall 5. The fit and construction are poor.
NATY

An organic brand, unscented and eco-friendly. They looked cute, as they were covered in green hearts. But I was disappointed with the overall construction of this brand and the price was not good at all.
They were bulky and not strong. I had managed to rip a few diapers in the process of strapping the diaper on. The strap was not adjustable or friendly. I had torn off a few straps when I wanted to adjust it.
I had found they absorbed well, and we did not suffer as many leaks, just a few, but it was not a good night time diaper. It would hold the wetness for about 4 hours.
The best feature of this diaper was it saves the environment; But the rickety make of them makes the money that we spent, not worth it.
8 Absorption. A few leaks; changed them often.
3 Easy to use. Bulky and ripped easily.
1 Affordability. Financially unreasonable.
10 Eco-friendly.
Overall 4. Overpriced and very little came in a pack.
SEVENTH GENERATION

My personal favorite was this brand for its absorption, unscented, good quality and eco-friendly.
They looked comfortable and cute on my baby; It had a well adjustable grip velcro and very absorbable. This diaper was my choice for bedtime, it had handled up to 12 hours of wetness.
The price was not such a significant difference to Pampers and Huggies. If I compare it to the other eco-brands then I am helping the environment, I have more diapers and it’s affordable.
9 Absorption. Lasted thru the night.
9 Easy to use. Adjustable straps, sturdy.
9 Affordability. Reasonable price for an eco brand.
10 Eco-friendly.
Over all 10 out of 10.
EARTH’S BEST

This was a decent brand, I was quite impressed. They had good absorption, looked comfortable, and an easily adjustable tab. Unfortunately, the unscented diapers had a plastic factory smell.
They were a bit rough on the outside and not as soft as the other diapers I listed. Similar makeup to the Parents Choice brand, but eco-friendly.
As a night time diaper, it was pretty good, held the wetness and the mess.
The price was what made this diaper not one of my favorites. I had bought them on sale but if you pay regular price, you’re paying a lot more than you should.
9 Absorption. Lasted thru the night.
9 Easy to use. Adjustable straps, sturdy.
5 Affordability. Quite costly.
10 Eco-friendly.
Over all 7. If the brand is on sale then it’s worth it.
HONEST

This brand says honest, is it? It was soft, with a waxy texture; had the most modern design options, good quality, absorbed well. What more did I need? Did I find the dream diaper?
Unfortunately, the price is off the charts. I know it was softer than the other eco-friendly brands; at night time the diaper stayed dry for about 8 hours, some leakage from the back, but it was just not worth the cost.
I heard other moms give great reviews about Honest diapers, but they always hesitated to buy them. The cost seemed a bit too high.
9 Absorption. Lasted thru the night with a few leaks.
9 Easy to use. Adjustable straps, sturdy and soft.
1 Affordability. Costly.
10 Eco-friendly.
Overall 5. Great for the environment, pretty, but burns your wallet.
The overall diaper winner goes to Huggies. I know I said Seventh Generation is the best, and I still purchase them when they go on sale, but it’s seldom available at a lot of store locations. Huggies is the cost effective option and provides all my needs.
If I want to save the environment; I would use cloth diapers. I own a few that are cloth -for just that reason- to help eliminate landfill waste.
Babies there you have it, the diaper review for your bottoms.

A special thank you to Pam and Kent and to Amanda Scheibner for editing.
