The Space Between Your Teeth

where floss gets lost

The space between your teeth. You can feel it with the tip of your tongue. Occasionally massaging with waxed string, despite your dentist saying “you should do this more often.” Some people use this space to whistle. Some have spaces that are more pronounced. Much can get lost in this space. Only to be found later that day, where you “don’t recall eating that.” There are tiny picks, some made out of wood, some out of plastic, designed to dig away at the space between your teeth. It is this space that allows your teeth to shift from side to side. Some teeth are farther apart than others, as if they asked “please give me more room.” There is a space between each of us. Where things and strings get lost and found. And when we bump together, we apologetically say “I’m sorry,” because this space is sacred. We floss away our daily dirt, to keep this space clean from waste. But there are times when we shed our enamel. And agree to close the gap between. There is little room for food or floss. This is the space that is you and me.
