What is it that girls say about tech schools? “The odds are good, but the goods are odd?” That’s pretty harsh. But, that is the world we live in, isn’t it?
It is sad, to me, that more women do not value this industry, do not see a future in it, and see themselves as unable to become accomplished in it.
It is a tough environment. But you strive…and you succeed. What is different about our math training environment than soccer or crossfit (where many women become accomplished, and are proud of themselves)?
Why aren’t math and computer science (I’m not talking about pouring concrete in a high rise here!) an attractive discipline for american women?
Anyhow,
Disagree with OP: there is natural aptitude, and personal preference.
Aptitude may be rooted in nature, but it is not gendered. Personal preferences may derive from free will. Free will can be influenced by both culture and gender (this should not be offensive).
I think that, for the most part, the CS culture is open to female participation…and has been, to an infamous extent, rejected as a legitimate occupation for effective males (those the media would dub “alpha males/suitable mates”) in the mainstream media.
