“N’Golo Kanté Has 15 Lungs”
Kanté’s ability to always be where team France needs him in order to break up plays has been praised by football commentators as well as his peers. Paul Pogba said that Kanté has “15 lungs”. Pogba may be onto something. Kanté covered more distance than any of his French teammates in both of their first two games.
Kanté has an elite understanding of where to be on the pitch. He is rarely out of position and sprints relatively less often than other players at his position. He does his work beforehand by staying active and anticipating the correct positioning, rather than needing to sprint back into position.
As a central midfielder, keeping track of your distance covered, sprints and positioning can be extremely valuable. You may not notice being fatigued before a game, but the data will show you that you were less active or that your sprints were slower. If you can track and understand your results, training and preparation become a science, not an art. That can give you a huge edge over your competitors.
