Hiring : Finding Those That Will Win

Technologies come and go.
Product needs change over time.
Startups pivot.

These all mean that an engineering organization’s tech needs changes over time.

Generally speaking, this means you should hire people with

  • general intelligence
  • inherent behavioral strengths
  • a propensity to get shit done

over knowledge of any particular technology

The behavioral strengths I look for engineers to demonstrate are :

  • ownership — they follow a project through to the end and takes the steps necessary to push it to completion
  • making an impact — they have the desire and ability to affect significant change
  • collaboration skills — they work with others effectively to produce a better result
  • craftsmanship — they excel at their craft, and aspire to do something at the very best level

It’s important that your interviewers look for these behavioural traits, as well as assessing technology and coding skills.
