Something seems to be missing in this analysis. Mainly it seems like there’s a false dichotomy set up. Really a good boss will be able to accurately observe and interpret what you’re doing. Someone who has become an expert in their field doesn’t do it without observing and interpreting their own performance successfully. It follows that they are much more likely to be able to observe and interpret the performance of their reports.
It also doesn’t seem to include someone who is an expert in another field. Perhaps being an expert in something else is enough to increase the likelihood of being a good boss?
