This is a little unclearly worded, and I think that it matters to a degree.

It was the share of women that dropped. The raw numbers for both men and women grew until 1986, then *both* started dropping at the same time, unil 1997, when they *both* started climbing again. Obviously, they did not rise and fall equitably, but I think that there is another factor going on that was not captured adequately in the NPR article.
