I agree with a lot of the article and that even some alt pop culture we grew up with was marginalizing. But Gen Xers get credit for being the transition between Baby Boomers and Gen Y as far as social enlightenment goes. I was an ally long before the term “ally” went viral. Did our expressions differ from now? Of course. For example, having good gaydar used to mean you were perceptive about differences between straight and gay/lesbian culture and social action. Now, it’s passe and considered offensive to wonder about one’s sexual identity. But gaydar was an important evolutionary step between pretending gay or lesbian people didn t exist or should hide their identity and where we are in 2017.
