Beautiful, strange, pure and convincing. Riddles unsolved. Riddles for Lydia and for the reader. I love that. Told as if the protagonist is not made up, but a real person talking to me. It took me a while before I understood I was reading fiction, not pages from the diary of Emily Carpenter. Admirable. You create a girl of flesh and blood and reveal the primitive logic of religion. Self fulfilling prophecy in its crudest form. The unfathomable is solved by seeing it as God’s will. (Dangerous too! Lydia suddenly has power to play God, now she has become a prophet.)

Your story has the quality of a poem. There is much more in it than the words tell us. I hope you take that as a compliment.
