You just show up and contribute. And this? A very cool contribution (jazzy cool… not cold cool)
Kathy Jacobs

Thank you, Kathy (twice), glad to get this opportunity to write and publish poetry in (US-)English. I will certainly try to contribute every now and then.

Jazz is one of the most important cultural contributions of the USA to the world. It will surprise you (it surprised several American friends) we even have streets and avenues named after great Jazz musicians like John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. Just search for ‘Almere Stad’ with any map app and zoom in to ‘Muziekwijk’.

There is a Trompetstraat (Trumpet street) too and it might please you to know that the chance that any lane, street, boulevard or drift will bear the name of your present president is exactly 0(zero).

Finally, my surname is pronounced in Dutch as cole-sma(a as in art). I’m afraid a forefather decided to attach his family fate to the vegetable ‘cole’, because Cole Porter was unknown in the 18th century. The suffix ‘sma’ means ‘son of’. Coming to think of it, I might call myself ‘son of Cole’.

Like what you read? Give Chris Coolsma a round of applause.

From a quick cheer to a standing ovation, clap to show how much you enjoyed this story.
