Fully agree, Sara.
And that must include changing the mentality that has crept in that has normalized mass murders, and using guns to settle differences.
The problem isn’t guns as such, it’s that it’s become normalized to use them wrongly. The Old West mentality of shootout to solve your grievances is back in vogue.
The young alienated kid, who’s had enough, thinks, well, just shoot everyone, that’s what everyone else in my situation does.
If there was an epidemic of people using their cars to kill, we would work on re-educating drivers that you just don’t do that. There’d be media campaigns shaming that behaviour.
Putting aside the criminals using guns, when Joe Average uses a gun to kill someone, it’s because it’s got into his head that that is a normal thing to do.
When there’s a shooting, everyone needs to come out and strongly condemn that way of settling your grievances.
And the NRA should be at the forefront. They should be running campaigns about “This is not what guns are for”. Politicians of all sides should unamiously condemn the misuse of guns, and call for better education.
Surely that is one thing everyone can agree on?
No longer do we teach our kids to settle their playground differences with a punch up. Yet it seems we have we let our kids and ourselves believe it’s okay to settle our grievances with guns.
