Report: Over 26,000 Rape Related Pregnancies in Texas Since the Abortion Ban Started

The study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has shed light on the profound impact of restrictive abortion laws on survivors of sexual assault. Titled “Rape-Related Pregnancies in the 14 US States With Total Abortion Bans,” the research estimated that nearly 520,000 rapes were associated with 64,565 pregnancies across 14 states with total or near-total abortion bans, following the overturning of Roe v. Wade[1].

Texas, in particular, accounted for 45% of the rape-related pregnancies, with more than 26,000 women and girls affected by this devastating consequence of the state’s stringent abortion law[2].

The findings of the study underscore the significant challenges faced by survivors of sexual assault in accessing safe and legal abortion care in states with restrictive laws.
