The U.S. Overthrow of Iran’s Democracy and the Rise of “Death to America”

The United States has a long and troubling history of interfering in the internal affairs of other nations, often with devastating consequences. This is nowhere more evident than in the case of Iran, where the U.S. orchestrated a coup in 1953 that toppled the democratically elected government and installed a brutal dictator who would rule the country for the next 25 years.

Prior to this U.S. intervention, there was no widespread anti-American sentiment in Iran. The Iranian people had no reason to chant “death to America” or harbor such deep animosity towards the United States. However, the U.S.-backed coup and the subsequent oppressive rule of the Shah transformed the political landscape in Iran, sowing the seeds of deep resentment towards America.
