Great article. The blocker for over a decade is moving from the current system is anything radically different (as opposed to complimenting it with green, or slightly altering it with gold). You can’t just tell academics to stop using the current journals they use, and instead use something different.
A small minority take an interest in our research is published and shared, the most, for understandable reasons, have their head down in their research that they are not aware what is happening down the corridor, let alone beyond.
In my view any new system would need to be in the commons (open access, cc-by), timely accessible before peer-review), not PDF based (and connected to the artifacts of the research, data, code, etc) but still reviewed by academics, though this could take a different form to today.
