Prospective is the Opportunity for Growth During Emotionally Intense Times

Humans learn through emotionally intense experiences. As cited in Science Direct there is strong evidence to support stress hormones released from adrenal glands are critical to memory consolidation. Other adrenal hormones influence memory regulation, the ability to retrieve experiences and directly cause our brain to pay attention.

So the lesson is simple.

Traumatic emotionally uncomfortable experiences serve as a wake-up call for the mind to pay attention.

Life can be like that. People can hurt, betray or otherwise inspire you. Franklin Roosevelt speech for entering World War II famously appealed to both the greatest aspirations and fears of our nation. The two most powerful emotions driving human action are fear and hope.

Fear and hope inspire great action.

FDR’S APPEAL TO HOPE AND FEAR

FDR famously said “I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us. Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.”

During FDR’s time people rallied to support in the face of great fear and hope. Similar to FDR’s experiences many of our individual circumstances dictate great fear and hope. Each person experiences their own world war 2 of emotions. In this state of discomfort there is significant opportunity for growth that can lead to great action.

The actions driving these emotions are key indicators for self-reflection. These action causing events are things causing inward growth. Action causing events inspire great emotion. These emotions signify our opportunity to learn ourselves. Through learning there is great prospective. Great prospective gives us a chance to truly understand what motivates our fear, depression and reluctance. The understanding from your newfound prospective will give you self-insight to comprehend what makes “you” tick.

INSIGHT FOR MY 2019

Most people occupy their minds without understanding the internal mechanics of their minds. This is equivalent to being impulse driven.

See something scary…avoid.

See something happy…approach.

Feel uncomfortable…leave.

Feel comfortable…stay.

Animals are impulse driven. The animal doesn’t understand why they feel what they do. The animal simply adheres to its emotions and instinct.

You can make a choice to not be defined by impulse.

This year was by far the most traumatic and emotionally charged year of my life. It would have been easy to be impulsive. I experienced actions that inspired strong sentiments. I experienced betrayal, love, compassion, honor, revenge, rejection, failure and rebirth. Through all these actions I focused on how significant these events were in my life. I took time to remember I needed to understand why each feeling was happening to me. I took time to remember emotionally charged situations cause significant opportunity for me to learn.

I chose to learn the source of my emotional impulses rather than be ruled by my emotional impulses.

It takes a great deal of self-control and internal strength to manage emotionally elevated states of being in a coherent manner. Emotionally charged situations can be like being drunk or high. Often the state of mind is clouded and unclear. Sometimes focus is afforded but often not.

The best of us learn while experiencing an elevated emotional state. Disciplined people know to experience the emotional state and reflect only after it passes. Strong people miss opportunity experience the state by tolerating it but don’t reflect only relishing in the fact they don’t act out of spite. The worst become possessed by the emotional state and become slaves to it.

I pulled myself together through divorce, business closures, slander, breaches of contract, lies, crimes (literally) against me, separation of family, legal action and in spite of these events I surfaced happy. Yes I said I went through all this and was happy it happened. I surfaced emotionally stable, focused and with all the opportunity I could ever ask for. God was a big part of it for me. We all must find an anchor source to gain clarity. Mine was God but to you it might be something else. Whatever is your anchor find it. I don’t say this to boast but to inspire you…the Professional Entrepreneur. If I can achieve this clarity so can you.

IN CLOSING FOR 2019

Remember fire burns down buildings but fire also forges iron. Decide if you are wood or iron. One burns to become ashes while the other melts only to cool into an extremely hard substance. If you focus your shape during the melting process you can become anything. I chose to become a sword sharpened to cut through anything in my path next year. What will you choose to be going into the next year?
