Self-driving cars are here. They’ve been around since the early 2000s and have come a long way from then.

Self-driving cars aren’t a distant fantasy anymore. They are already on the road, and you can expect them to be increasingly common in the coming years.

There are many factors that influence their adoption rate, including cost and technology readiness. But there is also growing acceptance among consumers, due to the increasing awareness of how self-driving cars can make our lives better in countless ways. At the same time, there are still some barriers to wider deployment — such as safety concerns — and these will take time to overcome (though with such incredible advancements in AI, not nearly as long as many might think).

Self-driving cars have been around since the early 2000s. In 2004, a team at Stanford University built the first autonomous car that could pick up passengers at a specific location and drive them to their destination. Since then, Google has been testing self-driving cars on city streets in California, Texas, and Washington for years now. Other companies like Tesla have also been working on their own versions of autonomous vehicles for just as long.
